*The John B. Reid Memorial Award is kindly provided by the Edmonton & District Pipe Band on behalf of John B. Reid and his family. This award *($500 plus a generous plaque and letter from the organization) honours the legacy of John B. Reid as a piping instructor and his dedication to piping and drumming. Starting this year, it will be awarded annually to the Grade 4 Piping ASPD Provincial Aggregate winner.
John was a leader in the pipe band community for 53 years up until the age of 81. He was Pipe Major of five different Alberta pipe bands over those years and taught bagpipes to at least 75 adults and kids, many of whom still play today. In later years, John also took on the role of Drum Major at all our Alberta Highland Games. His time piping with the Edmonton & District organization began with its origins as the Drummond Pipe Band, then the Big Rock Pipe Band, to the EDPB of today. The John B. Reid Memorial Award recognizes John’s legacy in teaching, encouraging and supporting piping and pipe bands in Alberta.
