Run by the non-profit Strathcona Highland Society, the Sherwood Park Highland Gathering is a family friendly outdoor event in the heart of Sherwood Park, Alberta. This event embodies the organization's ethos to promote closer ties in the community through the use of Celtic music, dance and traditions.
All piping, drumming and pipe band events will take place on Saturday, July 25. The Ceilidh is also held on Saturday evening in the Sherlock Holmes Pub Beer Gardens (on the games site), featuring West of Mabou! You certainly don't want to miss it! Tickets can be found here.
This Games also features the Robert Barbulak Memorial Hornpipe & Jig contest - an event dedicated to celebrating Alberta's Amateur piping community and encouraging the next generation of players.
The Robert Barbulak Memorial Trophy was established in 1994 by the Edmonton Caledonia Pipe Band, honouring a young piper lost far too soon. While studying at Simon Fraser University, Robert had become an accomplished player with the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band and had begun teaching younger players in the community. His life was cut short in a car accident in Vancouver, B.C. in late 1993 along with fellow SFU piper Malcolm Bokenfohr. In their memory, the Robert Malcolm Memorial Pipe Band was founded in Vancouver in 1994 to carry forward their shared dedication to developing the next generation of pipers and drummers.
Originally presented at the Fort Edmonton Highland Games, the ASPD is proud to bring this trophy back this year. As Robert was a graduate of Salisbury High School in Sherwood Park and a former member of the Edmonton Boys Pipe Band, it is remarkably fitting that this award be presented at the Sherwood Park Highland Gathering.
